1861-D G$1 AU55 PCGS....
Eye Appealing 1861-D Gold Dollar AU551861-D G$1 AU55 PCGS. Variety 12-Q. This issue's entire mintage of 1,000 to 1,500 pieces was produced in May 1861 under the auspices of the Confederate States of America. While it is obviously the most famous and desirable Gold Dollar from the Georgia facility, the 1861-D is also the rarest Dahlonega issue in this series. The interiors of this still-lustrous and somewhat prooflike example are reasonably sharp, but definition wanes over the denticles and lettering on the left side of both obverse and reverse. What this piece lacks in quality of production, as with virtually all 1861-D Gold Dollars, is made up with flashiness and originality. An outstanding find for the Southern gold specialist. Population: 16 in 55, 25 finer (11/04).
