Description:
1861-D Gold Dollar, AU Details
Produced by the Confederacy
1861-D G$1 -- Harshly Cleaned -- NGC Details. AU. Variety 12-Q. The 1861-D is well-known as the rarest Dahlonega gold dollar. It is also collectible as the only gold coin that can definitively be said to have been struck by the Confederate States of America. The mintage is unknown, but is estimated to have been between 1,000 to 1,500 pieces. The Harshly Cleaned disclaimer refers to uniform brightness seen over each side. The devices show even softness over the high points, but it is difficult to know whether this is from poor quality production that is seen on all 1861-D dollars or from actual wear. Struck from the leftover 1860-C die, part of the production problem of this issue is seen by the very faint UN in UNITED seen on all examples. The surfaces are lightly marked.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 25CV, PCGS# 7559)
