Description

1866 Gold Dollar, MS67
Seldom Seen So Fine

1866 G$1 MS67 PCGS. The post-Civil War mintage of the 1866 gold dollars climbed a bit to 7,100 pieces compared to 3,725 for the 1865, but few examples indeed of the 1866 attain the Superb Gem level of the present coin; even Gems are seldom seen. Many examples show severe die clashing, although this example shows some interesting clashing combined with die cracks running radially through the obverse fields to connect with the C in AMERICA and the N in UNITED. None of these affect the technical grade or the market appeal, in our opinion, and the eye appeal is great overall. The well-frosted surfaces are notably free of post-Mint contact, and the strike is sharp throughout both sides. Some diagonal planchet striations that appear on the reverse are as made. An elegant coin with lots of eye appeal and numismatic interest. Population: 6 in 67 (2 in 67+), 2 finer (4/13).(Registry values: N1) (NGC ID# 25D2, PCGS# 7565)
