Description:
Superb Uncirculated 1874 Gold Dollar
1874 G$1 MS67 NGC. The 1874 is one of the more frequently encountered Type Three gold dollars. It is also a logical candidate for a type set as hundreds of examples are available in mint condition. It is not until one reaches the MS65 level that the 1874 begins to show a relative degree of rarity. At the Superb level, only 32 pieces have been certified by NGC with six finer (1/05). This is a highly lustrous example that displays rich reddish-golden mint luster. Slight roughness is seen in the planchet prior to striking, but there are no mentionable marks on either side of this exceptional gold dollar. As a side note, 1874 gold dollars are seen with varying degrees of clogging of the obverse die across Liberty's headband. On this particular coin, only the L in LIBERTY is faintly visible.(#7575) (Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 25DC, PCGS# 7575)
