Description:
1883 Gold Dollar, MS66
An 1883 Christmas Gift
1883 G$1 MS66 PCGS. This boldly defined and prooflike yellow-gold dollar is a remarkable piece with delicate coppery toning on the reverse. Perhaps more remarkable is the small round gift box that held this coin for many years. The box is inscribed:

"The within gold dollar, procured at the U.S. Mint for the occasion was given to Myron Disbrow by his father M.H. Disbrow in remembrance of the happy gathering and Christmas tree at Curtis Gano's home on Dec. 25, 1883. Only 1000 gold dollars coined this year."

In actuality, more than 10,000 circulation strikes were made. Myron Henry Disbrow was born in New York in 1847 and died in Rochester, New York, at the end of 1909. He had three sons, Myron Henry Disbrow, Jr. (1873-1938), Thomas Curtis Disbrow (1881-1966), and Elbridge Gano Disbrow (1889-1952). The elder Disbrow was proprietor of Disbrow Manufacturing Company, a Rochester, New York, box maker. In 1883 he received a patent for a "fruit crate."(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 25DM, PCGS# 7584)
