The Most Beautiful of all Gothic Crowns?
Victoria Gothic Crown 1847, S-3883, KM744, Undecimo edge, PR67+ PCGS, perfect strike, virtually flawless surfaces, glittering mirrors beneath spectacular, rich, vibrant magenta reddish gold and turquoise "royal blue" iridescence -- a 100% original coin possessing eye-appeal that is nothing less than captivating. Eight thousand crowns dated 1847 in roman numerals, of this design style, were struck early in the reign of Queen Victoria, most of which ended up being carried by the dandies and other admirers of the queen as pocket pieces, which caused them to bear bruises, to become discolored, and to lose their mirrored qualities. Those coins remain popular among collectors, for the sheer beauty of the design. The average "nice" or relatively unscathed Gothic Crown grades on the order of PR63-64, and even these are exceptional survivors of the original 8,000-coin mintage. When it comes to numismatic quality, the numerical grade PR65 is the watchword, the standard to strive for, but very few Gothics have been graded PR65. The superb coins are PR66. Beyond them lies the territory of the rarest pieces in terms of quality, those that remain pristine, or virtually as made. Only a few have ever been graded PR67. And then there is this specimen, graded PR67+. That alone puts it within or at the top of the tiny number of most-desirable coins. But here we have not only that supreme numerical estimation of quality but also a degree of eye-appeal that raises this coin to the status of a work of art.
