Description

William IV Proof Crown 1831, S3833, KM715, plain edge, coin rotation die alignment, "W.W." incuse on truncation with very faint dots or periods, PR63 Cameo NGC, a choice specimen with fairly strong reflective mirror surfaces, delicate frosting to the portrait and reverse shield, and medium silvery gray and blue iridescent toning. Not a perfect coin but certainly finer than most seen. Examples exist with beveled rims and with high wire rims, as seen on this particular coin. Very rare. King William was Victoria's uncle, a long-time Royal Navy officer still remembered for his keen interest in reforming the naval codes and treatment of sailors, and his devotion to such duty led to his being known, in his day, as the Sailor King. His reign was fairly short and a prelude in many ways to the coming Age of Victoria. His portrayal in silver here is the very picture of a monarch of the late Romantic Era in England, engraved by master of the mint William Wyon, father of other talented engravers, while the splendid crowned and draped shield on the reverse side was the work of Jean Baptiste Merlen, obviously also a man of considerable engraving talent. Their work has come down to us in previous few surviving crowns of this reign, all rare in any grade, and here is a very nice one of them!

This is a most satisfied customer's testimonial of a true gentleman in today's era. It is rare that one encounters through the course of life a person which one has read in childhood' s classics or seen in movies of old.
