Important AU53 1793 Half Cent, Ex: Garrett1793 1/2 C AU53 PCGS. Ex: Garrett. B-2, C-2, R.3. This variety is distinguished by the long 7 in the date and the L in LIBERTY above the brow on the obverse, on the reverse the fraction is crowded between the ribbons. As noted by Roger Cohen, this variety is "usually seen in the lower grades of condition." This is a handsome example that is unusually well struck with the border beads complete and intact on each side. The coin has pleasing light color overall with darker brown accents around and within the recesses of the devices. The surfaces are smooth for the most part with just a couple of minor marks present, the most obvious one located in the field in front of Liberty's neck--also a useful pedigree identifier.
Ex: Harold P. Newlin Collection. Newlin was a Philadelphia attorney with offices in the Supreme Court Rooms and was a frequent correspondent with T. Harrison Garrett in the 1880s. (NGC ID# 2222, PCGS# 1000)
