1907 Wire Rim Twenty, MS63
Nearly Complete Wire Rim Around Each Side

1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS63 NGC. Seldom is a High Relief encountered with a wire rim as pronounced as seen on this piece. It is an old story, but one that bears retelling, that the Wire Rim variant valued so highly by today's collectors was actually viewed by Mint officials as a striking defect, and one they unsuccessfully tried to eliminate. The problem was apparently one of extreme pressure from three blows from a hydraulic press. The collar and die faces could not hold together under that pressure, and the result was a fine rim of extruded metal around parts of the coin where even the slightest space existed. In addition to the pronounced and nearly complete "fin" or wire rim, this is a remarkably well struck High Relief. The satiny mint luster shines with underlying bright, yellow-gold color while displaying the even, reddish-gold usually found on this one-year type coin. Close examination reveals a number of small, but individually insignificant contact marks.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 26F2, PCGS# 9135)
