Description

Lustrous 1907 Wire Rim Indian Head Eagle, MS 63 PCGS

1907 $10 Wire Rim MS 63 PCGS. Widespread within numismatic circles, the term 'Wire Rim' is, according to Walter Breen, as misnomer for 'Knife Rim' or 'Fin.' This feature consists of a thin extra rim outside the otherwise plain border on the initial 500 Indian Head eagles and some of the High Relief Saint Gaudens double eagles that the Philadelphia Mint coined in 1907. Readily visible on the present specimen, this feature owes its existence to the striking process that pushed extra metal between the die and the collar. Although suitable for presentation specimens, this rim would have interfered with business strike production as well as stacking in daily circulation.
The nomenclature of its rim aside, the 1907 Wire Rim eagle is one of the most grandiose and widely pursued of 20th century gold issues. This is a lovely Choice Uncirculated example that exhibits soft, yellow-gold features. The strike is superb and does full justice to both the careful method of manufacture as well as the articulate design. A stunning piece from both numismatic and artistic vantage points and a coin that no gold collection would be complete without.
