Description

1907 Indian Eagle, MS65
Wire Rim Variety, Judd-1901
Net Mintage of 472 Pieces

1907 $10 Wire Rim MS65 NGC. The initial mintage of 1907 Wire Rim Indian eagles was a mere 542 pieces, but 70 examples went unsold and were subsequently melted in the period between 1915 and 1918. None of the remaining 472 specimens were released into circulation, but were instead treated in the manner of some pattern issues, like the four dollar Stellas, being presented to Congressmen, Treasury Department officials, and other VIP's, or sold to citizens who ordered the coins from the Mint. The Wire Rim issue is actually collected with the pattern series, as Judd-1901, although 20th century gold collectors have adopted it as well. The issue was prized by contemporary collectors because of its limited mintage, and examples began to appear at auction a short time after they were issued. A typical description came from the Frank Clemes Smith Collection (B. Max Mehl, 1/1914), lot 565:

"1907 St. Gaudens type. Indian head. Rev., standing eagle. Wire edge, periods. The rare variety of which only 500 specimens were coined. Uncirculated. Rare."

Although the coin was included in the Smith catalog, it actually came from the collection of Henry Wisler, of Los Angeles. Wisler was one of the few West Coast collectors of that time, and his collection included many mintmark issues, which were just becoming popular in the early 20th century.
The 1907 Wire Rim eagle is the only variety that shows Augustus Saint-Gaudens original design for this denomination. This attractive Gem does full justice to that design, with sharply detailed central design elements and strong satiny mint luster. Even on close inspection, the pleasing yellow-gold surfaces show only minimal signs of contact, with a few highlights of green color. Census: 35 in 65, 28 finer (11/11).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 26F2, PCGS# 8850)

Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
