Description

1907 Wire Rim Ten, MS65
First-Year Wire Rim Variant

1907 $10 Wire Rim MS65 PCGS. The year 1907 was a transitional one for gold coins. Both the eagle and double eagle denominations underwent significant design changes. As a result, there were several varieties of eagles alone that year, including the Liberty Head design and three different Indian Head varieties, the Wire Rim with Periods, Rounded Rim with Periods, and No Periods.

The collaboration between Augustus Saint-Gaudens and Theodore Roosevelt is evidenced by the Indian Head design. When Augustus Saint-Gaudens had an artistic idea that worked, he would often slightly modify and reuse it on other commissions. In the case of the ten dollar gold piece, the head of Liberty is a direct descendent of the allegorical female figure of Nike (Victory) from the General Sherman Monument of 1905. President Roosevelt's input also affected the design. He demanded an Indian war bonnet substitute the laurel wreath.

Only 542 examples of the Wire Rim variety were struck. However, 70 damaged coins were melted between 1914 and 1915, leaving 470 pieces, the vast majority of which not only survived, but remain in Mint State because they were presented to dignitaries and VIPs and did not circulate.

This Gem example of the Wire Rim variety is housed in a green label holder. Deep yellow-gold color and lustrous surfaces provide this piece with exceptional eye appeal. The few minor marks present do not pose a distraction on this appealing coin.
