1907 Wire Rim Ten Dollar, XF45
A Popular Low-Mintage Issue

1907 $10 Wire Rim XF45 PCGS. CAC. Despite the low mintage (542 pieces, according to recent research by Roger Burdette, of which 70 unsold specimens were melted, leaving a net of 472 1907 Wire Rim tens that were released, see James Halperin et al., 2006), the Wire Rim issue is not a condition rarity. Halperin states: "Because of their novelty as a first-year issue and particularly beautiful design, many were saved from circulation; perhaps as many as three-fourths can still be accounted for."
This Choice XF example displays deep reddish-gold color with considerable remaining luster. A tick is visible on the middle feather of the headdress, as is a thin vertical scrape from the eagle's forewing nearly down to the leaf triplet. Nevertheless, this is still a nice representative of this popular issue.

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
