Description

1908 With Motto Ten Dollar, Sharp MS67
Beautifully Preserved Surfaces

1908 $10 Motto MS67 PCGS. By request of Theodore Roosevelt, who believed putting God's name on a coin was immoral, Saint-Gaudens designed the new double eagle and ten dollar piece without the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. Congress, however, overrode the President's wishes, and in 1908, Charles Barber restored the motto to both denominations, placing it, on the eagle, in the left reverse field.

The With Motto variant of the 1908 eagle was produced in rather substantial numbers (more than 340,000 coins), and remains one of the more plentiful issues in grades through MS66. At the MS67 level, however, it becomes genuinely rare, and finer pieces are exceedingly so. This piece displays seemingly undisturbed, iridescent green-gold mint bloom, with razor-sharp design elements and incredible eye appeal. Population: 5 in 67, 4 finer (5/14).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 28GJ, PCGS# 8859)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
