Description

Sharp, Lovely 1908 No Motto Eagle, MS66

1908 $10 No Motto MS66 NGC. Mint Engraver and Assistant Engraver Charles Barber and George T. Morgan, respectively, retouched the master hub and die and made new working dies to better bring up the stars, date, and inscriptions, although still without the motto IN GOD WE TRUST that was added later in the year, per Congressional mandate. This beautiful Premium Gem coin shows deep, mellow orange-gold coloration, with fine-grained, mattelike surfaces that are essentially free of all but the most trivial contact marks on each side. The strike is sharp. NGC and PCGS combined have certified only 16 pieces in so high a grade, with nine coins finer (4/07). This lovely coin is the kind of enduring numismatic acquisition that will never need upgrading, as one of the cornerstones of a fine U.S. gold type set. Census: 10 in 66, 6 finer (4/07).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 28GG, PCGS# 8853)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
