1908-D No Motto Eagle, Elusive Near-Gem

1908-D $10 No Motto MS64 NGC. The 1908-D No Motto ten is a curious issue, the first of the new Saint-Gaudens design from the Denver Mint -- Denver made only Liberty Head tens in 1907 -- and the last D-mint lacking the motto in the left reverse field, added over the objections of President Theodore Roosevelt. Even though 210,000 pieces were struck, most are found lightly circulated or in lower Mint State, as few survived in high grades. This near-Gem is one of 35 such at NGC, with three in 64+ and 19 finer (10/12). The luster is far better than usual for the issue, and the only mentionable marks are a tiny tick on Liberty's cheek and a near-vertical mark near the center of the eagle on the reverse. Deep reddish-gold color completes the broad eye appeal.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 28GH, PCGS# 8854)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
