Description

Magnificent 1908-S Indian Ten Dollar MS67

1908-S $10 MS67 NGC. Exemplary quality for this initial S-mint delivery in the series of Indian Eagles, one of mere 59,850 pieces struck. Writing in 1988, Walter Breen tells of two small hoards of 1908-S Indian Eagles that, in his opinion, account for many of the Mint State survivors in today's market. The first of these hoards surfaced in the 1940s, the second was repatriated from Europe in the 1970s. A limited quantity (perhaps 10-12 pieces) of Superb Gems are known of this sought-after issue, and their consistently strong eye appeal makes them among the most prized Ten Dollar Indians of any date or mintmark.
In addition to uncommonly smooth surfaces and an appealing soft, frosted sheen, both sides are overlaid in rich reddish-orange patina. The fields are just a few tiny luster grazes from perfection and a handful of small marks on the central devices are both well dispersed and inoffensive. Overall, one of the finest 1908-S Eagles we have ever offered and a coin that is sure to inspire interest from a wide variety of gold collectors. Population: 3 in 67, 2 finer (6/05).(#8861)(Registry values: N1) (NGC ID# 28GL, PCGS# 8861)

Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
