Description

1909-D Ten Dollar, Rarely Seen MS65
Reddish-Gold and Lilac Color

1909-D $10 MS65 NGC. The 1909-D ten dollar is an underrated and overlooked issue. Only 121,540 pieces were struck, and few were preserved in high grade. Gems such as this piece are notable condition rarities with only eight examples certified by both major services combined (6/11). This coin is frosty and granular, as usually found, but the most notable aspect of the surfaces is their originality. Both sides exhibit hints of pale lilac interspersed with the otherwise reddish-gold color. The striking details are strong throughout, and there are no reportable abrasions. Census: 5 in 65, 3 finer (5/11).

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
