Description

Captivating 1909-S Eagle, MS65

1909-S $10 MS65 PCGS. Prior to the discovery in the late 1970s of a hoard of about 60 1909-S ten dollar pieces, this issue was nearly impossible to obtain in Uncirculated condition. Subsequently, a few other small hoards were found. Despite these discoveries, the '09-S is still very scarce in the better grades of Mint State, as most extant pieces are in the MS62 to MS64 range.
Blazing luster radiates from both sides of this Gem, and a wonderful blend of apricot-gold and mint-green rests on each, with some copper-spots on the reverse. Rounding out the coin's grandeur is a well executed strike that imparts virtually complete definition to the motifs. This eye-catching specimen would have certainly graded Premium Gem, or maybe even Superb Gem, were it not for a couple of marks on the cheekbone. Population: 15 in 65, 7 finer (2/08).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 28GP, PCGS# 8864)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
