Description

Exceptional MS66 1909-S Ten Dollar Indian

1909-S $10 MS66 PCGS. This curious coin comes to us with no pedigree. It was not in the Norweb or Eliasberg Collections, and it appears to be finer than the Kruthoffer specimen (although we haven't actually seen that coin). It also seems unlikely that this piece came from the hoard of 50-60 pieces that entered the numismatic marketplace some 25 years ago, as those coins were uniformly graded MS60-63. The surfaces on this piece are bright and show vibrant mint frost that shimmers as the coin is tilted beneath a light. Light reddish patina is interspersed with lilac on each side, giving the coin an untampered, completely original appearance. Sharply struck, a strong magnifier is required to see any abrasions on this remarkable coin. One of the finest examples known of this scarce issue. Population: 3 in 66, 1 finer (4/03).
From the Davis Collection. (NGC ID# 28GP, PCGS# 8864)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
