Description

Low Mintage 1911-S Indian Eagle MS65

1911-S $10 MS65 NGC. The 1911-S has a mintage of just 51,000 pieces. The majority of survivors show light wear, either from non-numismatic handing or moderate circulation. The hard money tradition of the West changed gradually, although gold coins generally disappeared from active commerce by 1917, when the U.S. entered the first World War. The present remarkable piece shows nary a trace of highpoint friction, and the cartwheel luster is both potent and comprehensive. Rich pumpkin-gold and olive blushes alternate across the fields, which are only faintly marked. The reverse rim is bevelled, and an interesting threadlike lintmark on Liberty's mark distinguishes this piece from its few peers. The mintmark appears to be repunched, and shows an extra pair of serifs. Census: 13 in 65, 2 finer (9/06).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 28GV, PCGS# 8870)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
