Description

Elusive Gem Uncirculated 1911-S Eagle

1911-S $10 MS65 PCGS. In the challenging Indian Eagle series, the 1911-S is considered one of the premier rarities in top grades. Only 51,000 pieces were originally minted and, even after the appearance of a small hoard of 40-50 pieces in the late 1970s, the supply of Choice or better examples is extremely limited. This totally original 1911-S Ten Dollar displays a somewhat granular appearance, as is characteristic, and is very well defined for the issue. Dappled lilac and reddish-orange patina accents both sides and three pinpoint toning spots appear on Liberty's upper jaw. Population: 19 in 65, 8 finer (12/04).
From The Gold Rush Collection.(#8870) (Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 28GV, PCGS# 8870)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
