Description

MS64+ 1912-S Eagle
Better-Struck Than Normally Seen

1912-S $10 MS64+ PCGS. CAC. Michael Fuljenz, in his recently released work on Indian gold coins, ranks the 1912-S ten dollar ninth of out 32 issues in rarity at the Gem level. He comments that the "1912-S is a true condition rarity" in the series, adding that "nearly every known piece is very poorly struck with a considerable lack of detail, even less than the 1911-S and 1913-S." We are nonetheless pleased to offer the present treasure trove of several examples, each better-struck than is typical for the issue. This MS64+ PCGS specimen offers bright surfaces that are orange-gold overall, tinged with yellow at the rims. A strong mattelike finish complements the softly beaming mint frost overlying each side. The only mentionable marks are a couple of shallow horizontal ticks across the the high points of Liberty's cheek. There is some definition at the normally weak hair curls under LI. The reverse is also better-defined than normal, with good lower and peripheral details despite minor softness on the eagle's right (facing) forewing. Population: 10 in 64+, 9 finer (9/11).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 269G, PCGS# 8872)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
