Description

Frosty, Rich Orange-Gold
1913-S Eagle, MS62

1913-S $10 MS62 PCGS. The 1911-D Indian eagle may be more famous (and have half the mintage), but the 1913-S and the 1911-D are basically neck and neck in the rarity race, and at various times one issue or the other has been considered rarer. The 1913-S had a mintage of only 66,000 pieces, and the Akers Handbook, second edition, pegs the issue as second in high-grade rarity and fifth overall, noting that "even coins that grade MS-60 to MS-62 are seldom encountered, and MS-63s are very scarce." This piece displays abundant appeal, with rich, frosty luster emanating from orange-gold surfaces on both sides and tinges of hazel on the reverse. A scattering of abrasions is consistent with the grade, but they are minor, and this coin also shows none of the arcing mark through the date that afflicts many examples. Population: 42 in 62, 36 finer (3/11).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 28GZ, PCGS# 8874)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
