Impressive MS66 1914-D Ten Dollar

1914-D $10 MS66 PCGS. The 1914-D is generally considered the second most-available D-mint ten dollar Indian. The 1910-D, of course, is the most common D-mint, but there is a significant difference between the two at the high end of the grading spectrum. At the MS64 and MS65 levels, the '14-D is about four times scarcer than the '10-D. At the MS66 level only 15 coins have been certified with nine finer (11/06). The pronounced granularity on both sides of this piece is overlaid with bright, satiny mint luster. The surfaces are exceptionally well preserved, as one would expect from an MS66, with no obvious or mentionable marks on either side. As with most of the coins in the Kutasi Collection, this piece shows memorable color. Each side has subtle pinkish-rose patina that is interspersed with lilac on the reverse. The ever-increasing popularity and demand for this series is evidenced by the realization of $109,250 for the Dr. Steven Duckor MS67 example of this date sold by Heritage in April 2006.

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
