Magnificent Gem 1914-S Indian Ten, MS65 NGC

1914-S $10 MS65 NGC. While Saint-Gaudens' Double Eagle was produced primarily for use by the banking system, his beautiful eagle fulfilled its duty to the United States Treasury as a circulating medium of exchange. When one stops to consider the purchasing power that Ten Dollars possessed in the early part of this century, it is little wonder that few Americans could afford to set aside an Indian Head Eagle for future posterity regardless of how pristine it looked. While this grim reality hit many Indian Head issues hard, the San Francisco mint's production of 1914 suffered one of the worst attrition rates of them all. Although About Uncirculated and lower Mint State specimens are obtainable for a price, true Gems, such as the coin offered here, are of the utmost rarity and desirability. This is a stunning representation with a crisp, essentially complete strike (save for minimal softness on the eagle's upper wingtip) that is quite foreign to the series. The vivid orange-gold surfaces exhibit swirling mint frost and slight underlying granularity. There are no single abrasions that are worthy of concern and the surfaces do full justice to the vaunted grade designation. For future identification, a tiny black spot is seen about midpoint on the last feather. It is difficult for us to imagine a more attractive example of this conditionally challenging issue for an advanced gold collection. Population: 6 in 65, 3 finer (4/04). (#8877) (Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 28H4, PCGS# 8877)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
