Description

Remarkable Gem 1920-S Saint-Gaudens Eagle

1920-S $10 MS65 NGC. No important offering of Indian Eagles would be complete without a representative of the 1920-S. Along with the 1930-S and 1933, this issue is one of the most widely recognized rarities in this series. To the untrained numismatist, the '20-S may not seem like a noteworthy date. After all, 126,500 coins were produced, a higher total than that of the 1908 No Motto, 1911-D, 1911-S, and 1913-S productions, to name just a few other dates in this series. However, very few of these coins were actually released from the San Francisco Mint, and most were melted after the passage of the Gold Recall Act. Those coins that did survive typically grade Mint State, although some XF and AU representatives are known.
The present lot offers a remarkably preserved Gem BU representative whose surfaces are drenched in frosty luster and rich honey-golden color. The strike is typical of the issue, with softness of detail noted in the center of the obverse over the TY in LIBERTY and on the reverse over the eagle's trailing leg feathers. A few scattered abrasions are noted overall: a vertical group of five milling marks below and through star 1 near the left obverse border, and two parallel cuts on the eagle's upper left wing tip near its neck. Both NGC and PCGS, combined, have seen just three coins in MS65, with three finer (10/05). A remarkable opportunity for the gold specialist.(#8881) (Registry values: N14284) (NGC ID# 28H8, PCGS# 8881)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
