Lovely Gem 1908 Indian Half Eagle

1908 $5 MS65 PCGS. CAC. The year 1908 marked the transition among half eagles from the long-running Liberty Head to the new Indian Head design. Quarter eagles saw no "split year transition," as the 1907s were Liberty Heads, the 1908s Indian Heads. For eagles and double eagles, the transition was in 1907, and to the Saint-Gaudens design rather than to the one by Pratt. So the 1908 half eagle pair is something of an oddity among gold coins. This lovely Gem is a wonderful commemoration of the new beginning. The exposed obverse fields and the Indian's cheek are remarkably smooth and abrasion-free, and the strike is bold except for the lowest three feathers. Generous luster and amazing orange-gold and lime-green colors are a further complement. PCGS has certified only 18 examples finer (9/09).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 28DE, PCGS# 8510)
