Description:
1909-O Five Dollar Indian, Choice AU
Low-Mintage Key to the Series
1909-O $5 AU55 NGC. For collectors of 20th century gold, it gets no better than the 1909-O half eagle, which combines historicity and collectibility in a way that no other Indian Head issue does. The 1909-O was the last great dying breath of the dinosaur that the New Orleans Mint had become, a problem among Mint facilities virtually since its inception 71 years earlier, in 1838, when it joined Dahlonega and Charlotte as the nation's first branch mints. The 1909-O half eagle is the only O-mint Indian Head gold coin, and the only New Orleans-mintmarked Indian Head half eagle. Produced in the unusually low amount of only 34,200 coins, it joins the 1911-D eagle (30,100 pieces) and the 1908-S Saint-Gaudens (22,000 examples) among the lowest-mintage regular gold issues in the 20th century. This lightly handled example retains a fair amount of mint luster and the surfaces display tan-gold color. The only marks of note are a short nick immediately above the headdress and three or four shallow pinscratches in the right reverse field. The mintmark is weak but discernible, as often found on this issue.(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 25ZK, PCGS# 8515)
