Description

Choice AU 1909-O Half Eagle
Final O-Mint Five

1909-O $5 AU55 PCGS. Variety 1. The New Orleans Mint produced only 34,200 Indian half eagles in 1909, the last year of operations for that storied facility. As the only O-mint Indian five, this date is extremely important to mintmark type collectors, as well as Southern gold specialists. Doug Winter estimates the surviving population at 800-1,000 specimens in all grades, surprisingly high for such a low-mintage issue.
The coin offered here is a well-detailed Choice AU example, with vibrant mint luster and just the slightest touch of wear on the fields. The surfaces exhibit a bright greenish-gold patina, with accents of orange and lilac. A scattering of minor contact marks on both sides is consistent with the grade.(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 25ZK, PCGS# 8515)
