Description:
1909-O Indian Half Eagle, AU58
Sole Issue From This Mint in the Series
1909-O $5 AU58 NGC. CAC. Four mints would strike Indian Head half eagles in 1909: Philadelphia, Denver, New Orleans, and San Francisco. It is a well-known fact that the 1909-O five dollar coin is the only Indian Head gold coin struck in the 20th century. But the 1909-O half eagle issue is even more remarkable when one considers how long it had been since any previous strikings in New Orleans of the current gold denominations. New Orleans had struck no quarter eagles since the 1857-O, more than 50 years earlier. It had struck no half eagles since the 1894-O, 15 years previous. No eagles had been minted in New Orleans since the 1906-O Liberty Head, and the last O-mint double eagle issue was the rare 1879-O Liberty Head, 30 years earlier. It is a real wonder that New Orleans chose to strike an Indian Head half eagle issue in 1909, but numismatists today treasure any example and pursue them eagerly. This near-Mint example has noticeable remnants of satiny mint luster around the devices and the strike is remarkably strong; of special note in that department is the mintmark. The light orange-gold surfaces are generally only disturbed by small abrasions, the only exception is an arcing mark from the headdress to the rim through the RT in LIBERTY.
