Description:

1909-O Indian Half Eagle, AU58
Remarkably Attractive Example of This Key
1909-O $5 AU58 PCGS. The last gold coin issued by the New Orleans Mint would be the curious 1909-O half eagle, struck in the small extent of 34,200 pieces and thus doubly popular, due to the small mintage and its singleton status as the only O-mint half eagle of the new Bela Lyon Pratt design. Even though their mintages may be similar, grade-for-grade the 1909-O half eagle is far rarer and more expensive than the 1911-D quarter eagle; even upper-end AU examples trade in the five-figure range. This is a remarkably bright example with even orange-gold color. The strike is strong throughout with especially well-defined feather detail on the lower portion of the headdress, and the mintmark is also well-formed. Each side is minimally abraded. This is one of those upper-end AU coins that is actually nicer in appearance than many lower-end Unc pieces. We anticipate quite a bit of interest in this piece.(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 25ZK, PCGS# 8515)
