Near-Mint 1909-O Five Dollar
Still-Lustrous and Minimally Abraded

1909-O $5 AU58 PCGS. The 1909-O half eagle is a standout rarity within the Indian Head series, due to its low production of 34,200 pieces. The next-lowest mintage within the series was more than double that, the 1911-D half eagle at 72,500 coins. The 1909-O half eagle's small mintage nonetheless pales beside some of the 19th century O-mint issues, such as the 1879-O double eagle (2,325 minted); the 1879-O eagle, even lower at 1,500 coins struck; or the 1883-O ten dollar, at 800 pieces made. Even though the 1909-O half eagle's production looks generous alongside some of those notable rarities, it is a conditional rarity as well, and for all practical purposes most collectors will have to make do with a nice XF-AU or low-Mint State example. This is a bright near-Mint piece that retains generous amounts of satiny luster. The strike details are just a little soft on the lowest part of the headdress. Minimally abraded.(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 25ZK, PCGS# 8515)

HA is a traditional auction house, they set up their auctions slightly different from typical domain auctions. This works well, it seems to be a good mix of old age (live bidding in a prestigious hotel) and new age (online bidding).
