Description:
Premier Rarity: 1909-O Half Eagle, MS63
1909-O $5 MS63 PCGS. The premier rarity in the Indian Head Half Eagle series and a coin that is all but nonexistent in Uncirculated grades. The 1909-O Five Dollar is one of just 5 New Orleans gold issues of the 20th century and boasts a paltry mintage of 34,200 pieces. While we do see the infrequent MS 60 or MS 61 example, a lovely, Select Mint State piece such as this only comes along every few years. The striking details here are particularly bold for a product of the New Orleans Mint, being very well struck over the major design elements. The O mintmark is just a little mushy, but this is typical of authentic specimens and helps to expose the occasional counterfeit. Just the slightest reddish tinge is noticed over frosty green-gold surfaces and field marks are rather minimal for the assigned grade. An aesthetically agreeable example of this great 20th century condition rarity, sure to generate profound interest among gold specialists and New Orleans aficionados alike. Population: 6 in 63, 22 finer (8/05).(#8515) (Registry values: N10218) (NGC ID# 25ZK, PCGS# 8515)
