Description:
1929 Half Eagle, AU58
Lightly Circulated Key Date
1929 $5 AU58 NGC. It is a curiosity why the 1929 half eagles were struck at all during the first year of the Great Depression. Despite the original mintage of 662,000 pieces, most of the issue was apparently melted shortly after its production. The 1929 is the rarest single issue in the Indian Head series, and the present piece is an unusual one, in that it shows evidence of light circulation, unlike most survivors. The slight circulation wear nonetheless poses an opportunity for series fans. Slight high-point rub is detectible on the Indian's brow, the headdress, and the forward eagle's wing on the reverse. Antique-gold surfaces nonetheless retain essentially full luster, and generous eye appeal is blatant throughout both sides. A couple of hair-thin scrapes appear on the reverse, running through the eagle's neck. This piece would nestle nicely in a Mint State set as an attractive example of this key issue.
