Description

1929 Indian Head Half Eagle, MS63
Rare Final-Year Key Issue

1929 $5 MS63 PCGS. This Indian half eagle issue was the first one in thirteen years, and saw a substantial mintage of 662,000 pieces. The vast majority of the coins were never released into circulation, however, possibly due to the economic meltdown of 1929, and most were probably melted in the 1930s. Consequently, this is the rarest overall date in the Indian half eagle series, and it is particularly rare in circulated condition. Only a few dozen coins have been graded lower than MS60 by the two services combined. Most of the known examples grade between MS62 and MS64. Gems are extremely rare, however.

This example shows typical sharpness of detail over the centers, for the issue, with bold definition on the peripheral elements. The even honey-gold coloration across both sides is highly attractive, and the intensely lustrous surfaces show relatively few wispy marks for the grade.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 2800, PCGS# 8533)
