Description

1911-D Quarter Eagle, MS61
Remarkably Strong Strike Throughout

1911-D $2 1/2 MS61 NGC. The 1911-D quarter eagle was struck in two different varieties, the Strong D and Weak D types. Most collectors understandably prefer the Strong D variant, such as this piece, but even the Weak D carries a tremendous price premium compared to the other issues in the series. David Hall writes on PCGS CoinFacts: "Though rarer than 'strong mint mark' variety, [the Weak D] sells for much less. Seems that when someone buys a 1911-D $2.5 they actually want to see the D!"
This example displays rich, even reddish-gold color. The strike is remarkably strong, not only on the mintmark but also on the feathers in the headdress and top of the eagle's wing. A scrape in the field below OF on the reverse is the only mark of any singular note.(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 2894, PCGS# 7943)
