Description:
1911-D Quarter Eagle in Gem Condition
The All-Important Key to the Series
Rarely Seen This Fine
1911-D $2 1/2 MS65 NGC. Comparisons between different coin issues within the same series can be tricky at best, misleading at worst, and beauty and desirability are always in the eye of the beholder. Where the 1911-D quarter eagle is concerned, perception may trump reality. While the 1914 quarter eagle may be the rarer issue in the finest Mint State grades above MS65, the 1911-D is perceived, and rightly so, as the series key, in demand in all grades -- even those grades at which the 1914 is just another hunk of .900 fine numismatic gold. For example, take a look at the current (October 2012) PCGS Price Guide values for the 1911-D, 1914, and 1914-D in VF25 PCGS grade. With gold currently at about $1,780 per ounce, the melt value of an Indian Head or Liberty Head quarter eagle is roughly $217.32. The PCGS Price Guide gives a retail value of $335-$340 for every issue in the series in VF25 PCGS including the 1914 and 1914-D, with the sole exception of the 1911-D, which is priced at $1,400 -- more than four times as much as each other coin in the series.
Even well up into the Mint State grades, a manyfold premium persists for the 1911-D as compared to the 1914 and 1914-D, and it is only at the Gem level where the PCGS prices for the 1914 and 1914-D finally come to within half of the comparable 1911-D price.
This example displays rich, even reddish-gold color throughout. The strike wanes only slightly on the lowest feather in the headdress and at the top of the eagle's wing, but the mintmark is strong and readily apparent. The slightly granular, frosted surfaces show no obvious or mentionable abrasions on either side. Census: 81 in 65 (1 in 65+), 2 finer (10/12).(Registry values: N10218) (NGC ID# 2894, PCGS# 7943)
