Description:
1911-D Strong D Quarter Eagle, MS64
Remarkably Clean Surfaces
1911-D $2 1/2 Strong D MS64 PCGS. The Denver Mint struck four denominations of gold coins for the first time in 1911, namely the Indian Head quarter eagle, half eagle, and eagle, and the Saint-Gaudens double eagle. The Indian Head coins were all low-mintage rarities within their series, although the double eagle was struck in relatively plentiful numbers. The 1911-D quarter eagle, like its other gold counterparts, is usually a well-struck issue, although some examples show strike softness at the center obverse in the Indian's headdress, or on the lowest ornament on the necklace. (Are those bear claws? We believe so but have never seen any "official" description or documentation to confirm it.)

As indicated on the insert, the mintmark is strong and uniform on all sides. The strike details elsewhere are also boldly defined. What is perhaps most remarkable, though, are the extraordinarily clean surfaces. This piece could easily fit into an otherwise Gem set of quarter eagles.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 2894, PCGS# 7943)
