Finest Known 10 Toman Medallion

Qajar, Nasir al-Din Shah, AH 1264-1313 / AD 1848-1896, gold 10 toman medallion issue (27.68g, 36mm). Without mint name. AH 1209 (for 1290), seated lion & sun left. Unpublished and surely the finest known specimen. Minor weakness in center, otherwise Good Extremely Fine.

One of the most beautiful presentation gold medallions of Nasir al-Din Shah. depicting the famous Qajar motif of a seated lion on obverse, with sun rising behind, all within a wreath. The reverse bears the standard royal protocol within a circle, all within a wreath. The edge reeding of this piece appears to be produced by machinery. It is possible that the blanks were manufactured in Europe or elsewhere and purchased by the Iranian government for use.
