1942-D Over Horizontal D Nickel, MS641942-D/D 5C D Over Horizontal D MS64 PCGS. FS-501. According to the Cherrypickers' Guide, the 1942-D D over Horizontal D "is the rarest of the major Jefferson nickel varieties in Mint State." As with the 1942/1 and 1942/1-D dimes and the 1943/2-P nickel, the error was likely caused by mint worker inexperience during wartime. A lustrous near-Gem with light silver-gray and almond-gold toning. Marks are confined to a slender line on the dome of Monticello.
