Announcement: Sunday & Tuesday Internet Coin Auctions and Weekly World and Ancient Coin Auctions move to Heritage Live!

Our Weekly Internet Coin Auctions and World and Ancient Coin Auctions are closing with live, online auctions on HA.com's Heritage Live! platform beginning with the Internet Coin Auction that ends Sunday, September 21st and the World and Ancient Coin Auction that ends on Thursday, September 25th. Each lot is offered one at a time, in lot number order, in live auctions beginning at 8:00 PM CT. During this part of the auction, live bidders will be on Heritage Live! competing with each other and with previously placed Internet bids. The lot opens, requests live bids, and then closes when the bidding is finished. There is no change in how you place your secret maximum bids during the week the auctions are open on HA.com. In addition, once bidding on HA.com ends, 2 hours before the live sessions start, you still have the option to leave proxy bids through Heritage Live!

For more information about Heritage Live!, please visit HA.com/live. If you have any questions about this exciting format change, please contact us at 800-872-6467 or Bid@HA.com.

Description:

1793 S-12, B-21 Liberty Cap Cent, VF25
Tied for Second Finest Known
Finest in Collectors' Hands
Ex: Garrett-Naftzger-Holmes
1793 1C Liberty Cap VF25 PCGS Secure. S-12, B-21, Low R.6. Breen Late Die State Plate Coin. Breen Die State III with heavy reverse swelling at CE. Del Bland grades this coin VF20 and tied for second finest known with a coin once in the Virgil Brand Collection. Bill Noyes also calls this piece tied for second finest known, and grades the coin VF25. The two coins are virtual twins, and the only finer piece is a VF35 example that has been part of the ANS Collection for more than half a century. This coin and the Brand specimen are therefore tied for the finest available to collectors.
This piece has an important provenance, and a delightful story shared by Dan Holmes about his acquisition of the coin at the 1990 EAC Sale in Orlando, Florida: "Opened: 3,200, I jumped to 20,000, then in 2's to 30,000, I jumped to 35,000 and won the lot. JLO underbidder."
Absolutely splendid glossy olive-brown surfaces exhibit splashes of dark chocolate on the reverse. In the Holmes catalog, Grellman suggested that this piece may have been lightly cleaned years ago, but if it was, it was so long ago that the patina today is natural and beautiful. A few tiny surface marks are evident on each side with a trivial rim flaw over the A in AMERICA. Our EAC grade VF25.
Ex: John Work Garrett; Johns Hopkins University (privately, 3/1973); John W. Adams (3/1973); Denis W. Loring (3/1973); R.E. Naftzger, Jr.; 1990 EAC Sale (5/1990), lot 17; Daniel W. Holmes (Goldberg Coins, 9/2009), lot 22.
