1793 S-16, B-19 Liberty Cap Cent, VG10
Sixth Finest Known
Ex: Dr. Ruby, Daniel Holmes

1793 1C Liberty Cap VG10 PCGS. S-16, B-19, R.6. The typical 1793 S-16 cent is low grade with poor surfaces. Bill Noyes records 18 specimens in his color book, ranging from a high of VF25 to a low of Fair 2, based on his grading standards. The average grade for all 18 coins is just Good 6, exactly the grade he assigns to this piece, except he lists it as sixth finest known, and it is fifth finest in collectors' hands.
Importantly, the surface quality of this piece is far better than usual, as Noyes calls it "average," which in his language actually means that it is really nice. The 18 coins in his roster include one Choice, one Average Plus, five Average, six Average Minus, and five Scudzy. Based on his labels, the "Average Minus" coins are actually average for the variety, and this specimen is above average.
Del Bland assigns a grade of VG7 and records this coin as tied for sixth finest in his census. Both sides are glossy dark chocolate with a hint of olive and splashes of deeper steel patina. A small chatter mark is noted below the R in LIBERTY and a few trivial ticks are evident near the date, with a tiny rim nick on the inverted reverse. Our EAC grade VG7.
Ex: Dr. Charles L. Ruby (Superior, 2/1974), lot 335; Philip Van Cleave (Kagin's, 1/1986), lot 5018; Jack H. Robinson (Superior, 1/1989), lot 21; Dr. Robert J. Shalowitz (9/15/1989); Daniel W. Holmes (Goldberg Coins, 9/2009), lot 27.
