Description:

1793 S-13, B-20 Cent, XF45
Rare Liberty Cap Issue
1793 1C Liberty Cap XF45 PCGS. CAC. S-13, B-20, R.4. A young Philadelphia artist named Joseph Wright, considered among the most talented artists in America near the end of the 18th century, served as the Mint's engraver just after the facility began operations at the end of 1792. He created the Liberty Cap device punch that was used for four obverse dies dated 1793, and three more dated 1794 (the Head of '93 obverse dies). The four 1793-dated obverse dies were combined with two reverse dies to create six die pairs, and those pairings were responsible for 11,056 large cents that Henry Voight delivered to the Mint treasurer on September 18, 1793. However, Wright and his young wife both succumbed to the yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia just a few days earlier, and it is likely that the engraver never actually saw any of the large cents that resulted from his handiwork.

The Sheldon-13 die pair is clearly the most plentiful variety of 1793 Liberty Cap large cents, and it is the variety usually chosen for type or date collections. While examples are available in higher grades, such pieces are elusive. Bill Noyes ranks this specimen in a four coin tie for 15th finest of the variety, and his conservative grade of VF20 places this exact coin as the 28th finest of all 1793 Liberty Cap large cents.

This lovely piece has patina that resembles a woodgrain pattern, with alternating lines of light and dark brown. A triangular patch of darker patina joins the nose. The strike is nicely centered with only a few trivial surface marks, primarily on the reverse. This piece was also conservatively graded as "A perfect VF-20" when Bowers and Ruddy offered the coin in January 1983. The cataloger went on to write: "rich golden-brown and smooth with none of the usual roughness, damage, or repairs seen on more than 90 percent of all 1793 Liberty Cap cents." Our EAC grade VF20. Population: 5 in 45, 13 finer (3/13).
Ex: Denis W. Loring; John Wood; Bowers and Ruddy (1/1983), lot 697; Alan Weinberg.
