Description:
1793 S-10, B-10 Wreath Cent, XF Details
Injured Rim Obverse
1793 1C Wreath, Vine and Bars -- Environmental Damage -- NGC Details. XF. S-10, B-10, R.4. Our EAC Grade VF20. Ex: Mervis Collection. The sharpness is considerably finer than our net EAC grade, probably XF40, or perhaps XF45. Both sides are glossy mahogany-brown with blue-steel patina on the devices. Splashes of maroon appear primarily on the reverse. Moderate, evenly distributed corrosion appears on both sides of this cent. No other marks of note appear on the obverse or reverse. The strike and centering are good with full obverse and reverse border beads.

Breen Die State I. The obverse die has an injury on the rim at about 2:30 that is present to some degree on all known examples, and that feature is diagnostic for the variety. This early die state example has the border beads complete but out of round, while later die states have the beads absent at that location. Imperfect reverse centering does not permit viewing of the border outside UNIT to determine the exact die state.

Commentary. The obverse die is shared with the unique NC-5, and the reverse die is shared with the NC-4 rarity. The S-10 is the only available variety to exhibit both dies. Del Bland records six pieces that grade AU50 or better, and Bill Noyes records the top six in grades of XF45 or better.

Market Notes. Perhaps 150 examples are known in all grades with fewer than two dozen of those grading finer than the present piece, and examples in those higher grades are seldom offered for sale.

Provenance. Purchased from Greg Hannigan with no earlier provenance recorded.
From The Adam Mervis Large Cent Collection.
