Description

1793 S-11a, B-16a Wreath Cent, XF45
Vine and Bars Edge

1793 1C Wreath, Vine and Bars XF45 PCGS. S-11a, B-16a, High R.4. Our EAC Grade VF30. Smooth and slightly glossy surfaces exhibit an attractive blend of olive-brown and tan. A very small patch of maroon verdigris appears between the border and top of Liberty's head at LIB. Only a few trivial handling marks are noted, and the obverse has a series of minor rim bruises from 3 o'clock to 6:30. A few minor reverse rim bruises are also noted. This example has the sharpness of XF40 with minor deductions for the rim bruises.

Breen Die State I. The usual die state for S-11a, B-16a with no clash marks, cracks, or other die defects. Breen notes a faint ridge between ONE and CENT that is not readily apparent on this example.

Commentary. This die pair is transitional, bridging the Wreath and Liberty Cap cents. Three sub-varieties exist from different edge types. The Vine and Bars edge continues from the Chain and earlier Wreath cent varieties. Later strikes had lettered edges with either two leaves (S-11b) or one leaf (S-11c).

Market Notes. This piece is equal to the eighth finest in both the Noyes and Bland census lists. Although this piece is not listed in the S-11a entry of the PCGS Population Report since it is not attributed by them, it would rank as the third finest example of the variety that service has graded.

Provenance. Purchased from Greg Hannigan but unlocated in census records.
From The Adam Mervis Large Cent Collection.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 223H, PCGS# 1347)
