Description

Fine 1793 Periods Chain Cent, S-4, B-5

1793 Chain 1C Periods Fine 12 PCGS. S-4, B-5, R.3. The Periods obverse distinguishes this die pair, which receives an oblique mention on page 93 of the 2008 Guide Book. The Chain cent received a chilly reception on its debut, at least according to numismatic lore; Breen's quotation of an anonymous author who wrote for The Mail, or Claypoole's Daily Advertiser, a Philadelphia newspaper, is illustrative. The message, published on March 18, 1793, ran in part: "The American cents ... do not answer our expectations. The chain on the reverse is but a bad omen for liberty, and Liberty herself appears to be in a fright."
In the present day, of course, the Chain cents are regarded as numismatic icons. The present coin, though it displays significant wear and a touch of porosity at the margins, is a pleasing piece nonetheless. The chocolate and cinnamon surfaces show few abrasions. While Liberty's head is weak, as is frequently the case for Period representatives, the chain on the reverse is bold. EAC 8.
