Affordable Chain Cent, VF25 NGC1793 Chain 1C Periods VF25 NGC. S-4, High R.3. The "Periods" variety, so-called because of the periods that follow both the word LIBERTY and the date. However, on this particular piece the period after the date is only faintly visible with strong magnification because of localized striking weakness. Possibly engraved by Joseph Wright, as the design has a slightly different treatment and the periods are reminiscent of his 1792 pattern quarter where this device was also employed. The medium brown surfaces show a faint streakiness on the obverse. Several moderate-sized marks are seen on each side, the most prominent of which are: a rim bump at 12 o'clock, an A-shaped scratch on Liberty's neck, planchet flakes at the top of Liberty's hair and others on the obverse rim at 4 and 7 o'clock.(Registry values: P5) (PCGS# 91341)
