Description:
1793 S-4, B-5 Chain Cent, VF25
Periods Obverse
1793 Chain 1C Periods VF25 PCGS. S-4, B-5, R.3. This early die state piece has no evidence of the obverse die cracks that appear on later die states. The obverse has periods following the date and LIBERTY, providing immediate confirmation of the variety. It is thought that the engraver was someone other than the engraver of the earlier Chain cent dies, and Breen speculated that it may have been a sample die prepared by Joseph Wright during his bid to receive an appointment as the Mint's engraver.
All of the individual die details are sharp on this example, including a boldly visible date. Both sides show a combination of steel-brown, mahogany, and lighter tan, with minor corrosion of little concern. MRB Fine 12.
