Description:
Impressive XF 1793 Periods Chain Cent
1793 Chain 1C Periods XF40 PCGS. S-4, B-5, R.3. Breen Die State III. Closely spaced LIBERTY with I and E high. The date is also close, particularly the 93. Both legends are followed by periods, a unique occurrence in the Large cent series. This was likely an affectation on the part of the die engraver, rather than a deliberate but ephemeral subtype. The hardy reverse die was continued from earlier die marriages, with die wear evident on the bifurcated bases and weak crossbars of the peripheral legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Sheldon-4 is the final Chain cent marriage. The inaugural Large cent type was struck only briefly before its replacement by the Wreath cent, also a one-year type but produced in greater numbers. The replacement of the Chain reverse is often correlated with its contemporary criticism as "a bad omen for liberty," despite its appearance (as a symbol of strength and union) on the Continental dollar and Fugio cent.
The present example is tan-brown on the reverse. The obverse is darker brown with steel-gray highpoints. All legends are bold, including LIBERTY and the date, which are often weak on lesser-graded pieces. Fine detail remains within Liberty's hair. The fields are minutely granular, and a couple of light pinscratches are present above the RTY in LIBERTY. Minor edge marks near 1 o'clock on each side are noted but are unobtrusive, particularly within its third party holder. A worthy acquisition for the type set or Guide Book collector who desires a full legends example without the problems of damage or corrosion that often plague this issue. EAC 15.
